2nd rarest Type of the ABC series

The Cuban "ABC Peso" is  a specific silver coin from the 1930s, a type of Cuban Peso, not a modern currency It was named after the  A.B.C.   clandestine organization  that played a role in overthrowing Cuban dictator  Gerardo Machado  in 1933, and it is now considered a valuable numismatic item.  The 1934 coin is particularly well-known, though coins were minted from 1934-1939.

Historical context

  • The coin was introduced during a period of political change in Cuba following the overthrow of Gerardo Machado.

  • It was named the "ABC Peso" after the underground A.B.C.  organization that was instrumental in the uprising against Machado.

  • The 1934 version, cataloged as KM# 22, is a well-known example of this silver coin.

  • Some rumored stories claim the 1934 coin's design was influenced by communist symbols, though the artist was not a communist.

Physical characteristics

  • Composition:   .900 silver.
  • Weight:   26.73g.

  • Mintage:   Millions were minted, but few survived due to later events like being melted for their silver content or an accident during transport.

Modern status

  • Most were melted down, with only a fraction of the original mintage surviving today, which is why they are rare and valuable.

  • The surviving coins are sought after by collectors and can be worth hundreds of dollars depending on their condition.
